Spirited Kidz: Wiccans face intimidation at school

Spirited Kidz: Wiccans face intimidation at school

Dear Nadine,
I’m a practicing Wiccan and some kids in school are making life hell. They say stuff about what I wear and how witches were burnt in the past. They say I better watch out. Sometimes I feel so intimidated, I don’t want to go to school. Sometimes I just want to get even – with a black spell. Help! — Sam
Dear Sam,
While high school should be fun — it’s a place to make friends, try new experiences and study interesting subjects — for some kids, school sucks. They’ve been bullied.
Bullies are present in every school, in every state. Bullies pick on kids who stand out and kids that don’t. Bullies bully based on where a person lives, what a person wears, who a person’s friends are and what a person believes.
Statistics show that 1 in 4 kids are bullied at school, 80 percent of arguments with a bully ends physically and that 160,000 students stay home daily to avoid bullying. Bullying is scary and it must be stopped, because whether you’re red, white or blue, Catholic, Sikh or Wiccan, every student deserves to study in a safe, school environment, their personal space held sacred.
